While attending LEE (Learning Enrichment Experiences) Services, participants are provided a variety of experiences and opportunities that enrich lives, maximize their potential for self-sufficiency, and expand their interests. All activities are age appropriate, offering variety and choice that emphasize community integration, and focus on small groups as well as individual interactions.
Instructions and participation occur in one-to-one settings or small groups of one skill instructor –Direct Support Professional (DSP)- to three participants, or one DSP to five participants with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) depending on their identified outcomes as stated in the Service Delivery Plans. Each learning enrichment experience is provided in 30 to 60 minute sessions.
At LEE Services, we focus on skill building that assists participants with IDD navigate through the world. Our emphasis is on creating a social environment geared towards providing opportunities for enhanced relationships and connections with others who may or may not have IDD. Community Inclusion Services
Community Inclusion Services are activities designed to achieve and/or maintain the outcomes of increased independence, interdependence, productivity, enhanced family functioning, and inclusion in the community, as outlined in the participant’s Service Plan. These services are delivered on small group basis and may include but not be limited to assistance with community based activities, educational and leisure activities.
Community Based Supports
Community-Based Supports Services are activities that provide direct support and assistance for participants, with or without the caregiver present, in or out of the participant’s residence, to achieve and/or maintain the outcomes of increased independence, productivity, enhanced family functioning, and inclusion in the community, as outlined in his/her Service Plan. Community-Based Supports are delivered through one-on-one instruction with a participant and may include but are not limited to: assistance with community-based activities and assistance to, as well as training and supervision of, individuals as they learn and perform the various tasks that are included in basic self-care, social skills, and activities of daily living.
Prevocational Training services provide learning and work experiences, including volunteer work, where the participants can develop general, on-job-task-specific strengths and skills that contribute to employability in paid employment in integrated community settings. Services may include training in effective communication with supervisors, co-workers and customers, generally accepted community workplace conduct and dress, ability to give and follow directions, ability to attend to tasks, workplace problem solving skills and strategies, as well as general workplace safety training.
Day Habilitation Services
Day Habilitation Services provide education and training to acquire the skills and experience needed to participate in the community, consistent with the participant’s Service Plan. This may include activities to support participants with building problem-solving skills, self-help, social skills, adaptive skills, activities of daily living, and leisure skills. Day Habilitation activities and environments are designed to foster the acquisition of skills, building positive social behavior and interpersonal competence, greater independence and interdependence as well as personal choice. These services do not include employment-related training. Day Habilitation Services will include but not be limited to the following:
Effective Communication Skills
Effective communication skills include non-verbal, verbal and assistive technology enhanced tools to demonstrate receptive and expressive communication. Building self-confidence, problem solving, interpersonal competence, social and adaptive skills are integrated throughout our services and begins with honoring the individual’s voice and choice in all activities. Creating opportunities for self-sufficiency depends on empowering the person to make informed choices, we facilitate the development of these essential skills through dynamic methods of instruction and interactive techniques and tools.
Community Inclusion and Integration
Community inclusion and integration is an integral part of each day where participants have opportunities for service learning projects and enriching experiences to participate in collaborative community efforts with local colleges and universities. Each participant is provided opportunities to experience partnerships through teamwork, leading and taking directions, practice active listening skills, explore probing questions and learn how to navigate systems for support. Learning is provided in a judgment free manner, while preserving the dignity and respect of each person to make informed choices and decisions, which leads to effective advocacy.
Daily Life Skills
Daily life skills are a core necessity for living meaningful and fulfilling lives. Many of the individuals attending the LEE Services may want to someday transition from their family home into a supportive housing situation and need to work on basic life skills like going to the grocery store, the bank, the post office, and department store, as well as paying bills, doing laundry and cleaning house. These skills are developed through active engagement in personal instruction and small group activities.
Personal choice is promoted through the development of customized activities within the daily schedule. Each participant is provided an overview of each activity through pictures, videos, gestures, etc. to assist them in deciding what activities they would like to participate in as they create their personalized schedule.
Culinary And Healthy Eating
Culinary and healthy eating activities build on social and team work skills, as participants work together to plan and create a meal based on their dietary needs and restrictions, they participate to the maximum extent possible in the preparation of a meal, learn to set a table, serve a meal, enjoy it and clean up. Practicing good nutrition, safe food handling and proper food storage are imbedded in the curriculum. Practicing culinary skills promote community participation as individuals and groups through activities like going to the local supermarket to purchase groceries, and participate in local food education programs as well.
Computer Skills encompass using different applications on the computer, since a computer can be used for a multitude of purposes. Training is based on the individual’s abilities and needs. Participants have the opportunity to learn web development, and enhance their computer literacy skills. Activities include practicing typing skills, developing a basic understanding of Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel, PowerPoint, using the internet search engines and processing information. Individuals also learn about social networking, internet safety, and are encouraged to research areas that interest them. Participants have access to various software learning applications based on their individual interests.
Photography classes encourage community participation as individuals and groups go to many locations in our local area to take photographs, learn historic facts, gain inspiration, and open the possibilities of showcasing their photography in local art competitions and galleries. Photography is a great way to build lifetime memories and relationships and preserve them by scrapbooking, creating online albums, or framing for display. Photography also encourages personal development as individuals choose to highlight the world through their eyes and create projects from start to finish that provide a sense of accomplishment and increase their self-esteem and self-confidence.
Music appreciation classes are geared to encourage individuals to explore music they may not have been exposed to as well as the experience of playing an instrument. Music has been proven an effective tool for personal development in persons at all levels of development. As an individual learns an instrument, their confidence builds. We partner with Music Therapy Associates, since it can be used as a therapeutic tool, helping individuals to self regulate, relax or dance to burn off energy or frustration.
Art classes incorporates various skills as participants learn to operate many different tools and explore different mediums. Classes encourage working individually as well as working as a group. Suggestions and instruction are provided to help individuals grow and explore through imagination and creativity. Everyone is encouraged to create projects from recyclable materials. LEE Services focuses specifically on creating art projects and sculptures from recyclable materials to reduce our carbon footprint and contribute to the betterment of our society.
Wellness through physical education and movement is provided daily at LEE Services. Classes such as Yoga, Gi-Gong and Silent Disco help participants develop stress management techniques, relaxation techniques, and overall increased health and wellness. Morning Me-Moves movement and dance sessions promote physical activity through having fun by learning the latest social dance steps that are common at weddings and other celebrations.
Community Service Learning Projects
Community service learning projects involve actively partnering with community organizations to provide service learning projects as a teaching and learning strategy to integrate meaningful community service and teach civic responsibility. This experiential learning creates a reciprocal and balanced emphasis on both the participants learning and addressing real needs in the community, such as assisting with community events and projects (e.g. community garden), cultural awareness programs, fairs/festivals, neighborhood clean-up/beautification days, and helping senior citizens with a variety of activities that enhance their quality of life.
Transition Program: Next STEPS
In special education transition refers to the process of supporting youth as they complete high school and prepare for a productive adult life.
What Is Next STEPS?
Next STEPS is a community based Supplemental Transition Education Program for Students (STEPS) with developmental disabilities designed to meet their individual goals with linkages to post school options. A smooth transition to adult services is more likely to occur if representatives from adult agencies are included in the transition IEP as early as possible.
